The Art of Draping: Day 5

Happy Friday!! Happy weekend!! I'm happy because I took the metro, got fabric, and dinner all by myself today! #grownupthings I also found these awesome muslin coveralls in the scrap bin at the studio today and I think I'm keeping them! Everyone needs a pair right?

The Shirt Boys

It’s day 5 and I have completed my first week of draping in Paris! Today we visited the Palmer // Harding showroom and it was another unforgettable morning! Levi Palmer and Matthew Harding are known as “the shirt boys” in the fashion world. This duo creates innovative shirts with extraordinary pattern cutting and draping techniques. They were surprisingly humble, even though they recently dressed Michelle Obama at the Partnership for a Healthier America Summit in Washington, D.C..

What I learned from today...

  1. It’s realllyyy hard to do everything yourself. Palmer // Harding is a duo and the two men play off of each other’s strengths extremely well. Levi even admitted that he probably wouldn’t have been able to persevere through the tough seasons without a partner. (The fashion world is a scary world sometimes people!!)

  2. Know your products. Know which pieces are cash cows and which are question marks.

  3. Sometimes limiting yourself can be very freeing. For example, in an art class you typically aren’t told “make whatever you want”. Normally there are guidelines for the project or certain criteria you need in order to keep your portfolio focused and create within those limitations. (I hope that makes sense? I’m not really sure how to explain it, but it's true!!)

So that was the highlight of my day and I was also sooo lucky today because I found fabric for my project. It’s INCREDIBLE! It was in the buckets they were about to throw out, but thankfully I saved it from an awful death in the garbage bin! Look at these photos….beautiful right?! Maybe I should make a huge poncho or 3 piece suit?? Lol who knows! The possibilities are endless!

I hope you all have a great Friday night and wonderful weekend! Tomorrow I’m off to Northern France for some time away from the city…ahh it’s going to be so relaxing. Chat soon! Xoxo

Fun Fact of the Day: Sometimes the streets of Paris smell like pee in the morning lol it’s nasty...
